ABOUT THE GRAMPIANS REGION..

From bushwalking and abseiling to wine tasting and dining, the Grampians offers the full range of fun and sophistication.

The Grampians region is regarded as a premier nature-based and adventure destination. From gentle bushwalking to extreme rock-climbing. There are a range of guided tours to help you conquer the mountains.

Winemaking in the Grampians Region

Located against the backdrop of the spectacular ranges of the Grampians National Park is one of Australia’s most historical and acclaimed wine regions. The proximity of the Grampians to the wineries around the townships of Great Western, Ararat, Buangor, Moyston and Halls Gap contribute to cool climate viticulture and result in wines with intense varietal character.

The individual character of these fine wines is available for sampling and sales at any of the cellar doors. Your first choice is either to self drive or take a guided tour. Visit the Great Grape Touring Route website for more information.

History, Art and Culture

Alluvial gold was discovered by a shepherd in 1853. Stawell soon developed into a thriving town. Records show that by 1857 up to 20,000 people were putting their fate in the goldfields around Stawell.

Stawell was proclaimed a township in 1858. The first Stawell Gift was run in April 1878, the event today remains one of the world’s richest professional foot races. In the 1920s a new industry, textiles, was providing prosperity to the residents of Stawell.

An enjoyable, nostalgic experience, the Stawell Heritage Trail provides an excellent introduction to the town’s local history.

Food and Dining

From the ranges of the Grampians mountains to the vineyards of Great Western and the vine-lined streets of Ararat, the region offers a vast range of tasty delights to excite your palate and tempt your inner gastronome.

A diverse range of land use through the rolling hills and flat pasture land has fostered a diverse range of food producers – you can sample a range of these in local restaurants and cafés and at farm gate sales, where friendly locals will show you the fruits of their labours.

Mediterranean-style olive groves, tall rambling berry canes, busy bee boxes and sculpted lavender bushes dot the landscape, so why not take a drive and explore, or sit down and relax and let one of our world-class chefs prepare something especially for you.
