About the township of Stawell

Location: 233 kms NW of Melbourne. Population: 6,035.

With magnificent views of the Grampians, and a unique gold heritage, Stawell is the perfect stop for lunch or for a short break. Pastoral runs in the Stawell area were selected in the 1840s, but it was the gold found by a shepherd in the district in May 1853 that provided the real reason for a town.

The Stawell Gift - known as the richest foot race in the world - runs for three days over Easter. The town comes alive with the excitement and atmosphere from the influx of tourists and famous athletes. A visit to the Gift Hall of Fame is a must. The town’s Main Street features fine examples of historic buildings including the Town Hall, with its animated clock and Westminster Chimes. Stawell’s excellent range of accommodation and strong commercial centre makes it an ideal base for exploring the Grampians Ranges and nearby wineries.

New cafés and a vibrant main street make Stawell an attractive alternative for a day trip or a longer stay.

Accommodation: 7 motels, 1 hotel, 4 bed and breakfasts, 2 host farms, 1 self-contained cabin complex, 2 caravan parks.
